DELTA HERITAGE PULSE

Heritage sites in Ngao clean up activity

We do not inherit the land from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children. With that truth in our hearts, Shield of Heritage gathered on March 28 for a day of action. We cleaned Ngao Museum, the German missionary graves, and the sub‑chief’s office. Each site holds memory. We came to show that memory deserves care.

We moved to the river Tana main section in Ngao, next to the council of elders’ sacred meeting place(Gasa). The 1896 German bell still rings here, calling our community together. We cleared the Central Business District and the first missionary church. Every sweep was a statement: our heritage will not be forgotten.

We were joined by Ngao Community Health Promoters, who donated gloves, masks, and first‑aid kits. Their support turned cleaning into community healing. Our patron, UNESCO WHV coordinator Mr. Azan Ngumbao, planned alongside us. Together we proved that heritage work brings people together across sectors and generations.

Many locals pass these sites daily without seeing their value. Awareness begins with action. By cleaning, we invited everyone to look again at the bell that still rings, the church that still stands, the river that still flows. A clean site whispers: "this matters." We hope the whisper becomes a roar.

We ended the day by the riverbank, watching birds return at sunset. It was a glimpse of what the delta can become: clean, alive, and cherished. This was one day. But we are here for the long journey. Guard. Revive. Promote. Our children will inherit a land we cared for.
