A Historic Turning Point for Tana River's Heritage as NMK Officials Visit Ngao Museum

Updated: Mar 12

On February 9th, 2026, the National Museums of Kenya (NMK) paid a historic visit to the Ngao Museum—the only museum in Tana River County. Led by Mr. Hussein Aden and Jambo Haro, the delegation met with community leaders, women representatives, the museum committee, and the youth for honest dialogue about the region's paradox: abundant cultural and natural heritage, yet economic struggle and a museum forgotten by its own people. This gathering represented the first time national heritage authorities had come to listen directly to grassroots voices in this marginalized community.

The most powerful moment came when the youth of Shield of Heritage shared their story. Born from the World Heritage Volunteers program, these young people refused to watch their heritage die. Without funding, they began volunteering at the neglected museum and organized the first-ever Ngao Cultural Festival—a stunning success proving the community's hunger for revival. The NMK delegation was visibly moved. They encouraged Shield of Heritage to complete its CBO registration—a process now officially complete, granting legal standing and the ability to receive funding.

Four transformative outcomes emerged from this historic meeting. Long-standing community conflicts were resolved peacefully, uniting the path forward. All parties affirmed the Ngao Museum as vital to preserving Tana River's narratives. Shield of Heritage celebrated the completion of its CBO registration, transitioning from volunteers to a legally recognized institution. Most significantly, the National Museums of Kenya committed to helping Shield of Heritage and the youth to transform Tana River's fading heritage into a gold mine for sustainable development, bringing national expertise to support grassroots revival.

(NMK Officials Visit Ngao Museum) This historic visit validates everything Shield of Heritage has believed: youth-led action works, community unity is possible, and national institutions will partner with credible grassroots movements. With CBO registration complete and a national partner now committed, Shield of Heritage stands ready. The giant has awakened. Tana River is rising. And this is only the beginning.

Kudos to the organising committee for a job well done. Our heritage is all we should be proud of. We also appreciate the efforts of NMK towards restorring what was fading away.
