The Dhome Kikwetu cultural festival at the Mambrui sand dunes in Kilifi County was hands down one of the most lit festivals we have ever attended. From the energy of the performances to the richness of the traditions on display, the event portrayed high cultural standards and was simply fun beyond words. Traditional dances, art, and music all came together against the backdrop of golden dunes. It was a celebration of identity that reminded everyone why culture matters.
As Shield of Heritage, we went not just to have fun (though we had plenty), but to learn. And learn we did. Seeing how other communities proudly showcase their heritage inspired us to think bigger about our own work in the Tana Delta. The festival sparked new ideas for Tana Delta youth innovations. From cultural tourism experiences to youth-led heritage events that can bring our own stories to life. We took notes, made connections, and came back energized.
Kilifi County showed us what is possible when young people fully own and celebrate their culture. Now we are bringing that fire back to the Tana Delta. Expect bigger festivals, bolder storytelling, and more Tana Delta youth innovations that put our
heritage on the map. Thank you, Dhome Kikwetu, for the memories and the lessons. See you next year! ✊🏾

From the golden sands to the rhythmic pulse of traditional dances, Dhome Kikwetu was a masterclass in how to keep culture 'lit' for the modern era. It reminded us that heritage is a living, breathing joy
